The Man and Woman of the Year for Punxsutawney will be announced, as well as, the new Ambassadors of the Groundhog Club. The Banquet will be catered by Luigi’s Italian Restaurant.
This year's speaker for the Annual Groundhog Banquet will be WTAJ-TV Chief Meteorologist, Joe Murgo. Jeff Lundy, the master of ceremonies states, “Joe has broadcasted live from the Knob on Groundhog Day for more than a decade and we consider him our Phil Connors. The Inner Circle is absolutely delighted that he was able to arrange his schedule to also be our guest speaker this year.”
Well known to people in the region, Murgo has been a fixture on Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Day for many years. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. but also lived in places such as Tulsa, Ok., and Morgantown, WV, which allowed him to experience different types of climates and weather throughout his lifetime.
Murgo received his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from Penn State in 1990. For several years he served as Senior Meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, forecasting and broadcasting to radio stations and providing critical forecasts for television stations across the nation. He then moved on to television, joining the forecasting team at WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio and followed that up with time at WUSA-TV in Washington D.C.
Returning to central Pennsylvania, Murgo accepted the position of Chief Meteorologist for WTAJ-TV in 2001 and became the state’s first Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, a designation awarded by the America Meteorological Society.
Murgo shares his love and knowledge of meteorology by teaching introductory courses to students at Penn State’s Altoona Campus. He is married to Mara and has two daughters, Kristen and Rebecca. He loves to be involved with many community events, during the winter, you can catch him on the ski slopes. For over 18 years, Murgo has covered Groundhog Day for his viewing audience from his spot near Punxsutawney Phil’s stump at Gobbler’s Knob.
